For the switch and your PC or laptop to communicate, their IP addresses
should be in the same network or subnetwork. In this example, the switch
and your PC or laptop are in the network 172.20.20.0:

When you assigned the switch IP address, the switch
became part of an IP network or subnetwork that is different from the
network or subnetwork to which your PC or laptop (network management station)
belongs. Here is an example of the current status of the switch and
your PC or laptop:

To change the IP address of your PC or laptop, either
Connect your PC or laptop to
the network where a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server
allocates IP addresses within the range that is assigned to your switch.
or
Enter a static IP address
through your PC or laptop Control Panel by following these steps:
1. From your PC or laptop, choose Start
> Settings > Control Panel > Network and Dialup
Connections > Local Area Connection. This displays the
Local Area Connection Properties window.
2. Check Internet Protocol (TCP/IP),
and click Properties.
3. Click Use the following IP
Address, and in the IP address field, enter an IP address
that is in the same subnetwork as the switch.
4. Click OK to save your
settings.
5. Click OK again to close
the Local Area Connection Properties window.
