For the switch and PC to communicate,
their IP addresses should be in the same network or subnetwork.
In this example, the switch and PC are in the network 172.20.20.0:

When you assigned the switch IP address,
the switch became part of an IP network or subnetwork that is different
from the network or subnetwork to which your PC (network management station)
belongs. Here is an example of the current status of the switch
and your PC:

To change the IP address of your PC,
either
- Connect your PC to the network where
a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server allocates
IP addresses within the range that is assigned to your switch.
or
- Enter a static IP address through
your PC Control Panel by following these steps:
Step 1 |
From your PC, choose
Start > Settings > Control Panel >
Network and Dialup Connections > Local Area Connection.
This displays the Local Area Connection Properties window. |
Step 2 |
Check Internet Protocol (TCP/IP),
and click Properties. |
Step 3 |
Click Use the following IP
Address, and in the IP address field, enter an IP
address that is in the same subnetwork as the switch. |
Step 4 |
Click OK to save your settings. |
Step 5 |
Click OK again to close
the Local Area Connection Properties window. |
