port number

A number that identifies a connection to a server program on a computer in a network. Default port numbers are assigned to common types of protocol connections. Default port numbers are assigned for both unencrypted connections and connections encrypted with Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols.

When you configure desktop messaging e-mail clients, ensure that the correct port number is set for each connection type.
